Once you have decided a retaining wall is going in, the next decision is what to build it from. For most Melbourne backyards that comes down to two options: treated pine sleepers or concrete sleepers set into galvanised steel posts.
Both work. Both are used across thousands of homes in the western suburbs. But they behave very differently over twenty years, and the cheaper one at the checkout is not always the cheaper one across the life of the wall. Here is how the two compare on the things that actually matter when you are choosing retaining wall materials.

Lifespan is where the two really separate
H4 treated pine is rated for in ground contact and will give you fifteen to twenty years in Melbourne conditions. That number assumes good drainage. Where water sits against the timber, or where the wall was built without agricultural drain behind it, that figure drops sharply. The failure is rarely sudden. Sleepers soften at the base, the wall starts to bow, and one wet winter it lets go.
Concrete sleepers do not have that failure mode. There is nothing in the panel for water, insects or fungus to attack. When a concrete sleeper wall fails it is almost always because of footing depth or drainage, not the sleeper itself. Fix those two things at build time and the wall outlives the fence, the deck and usually the owner.
The cost picture changes when you look past year one
Timber wins on the day you buy it. Treated pine sleepers typically run around half the material cost of concrete for the same wall.
Spread across the life of the wall, that inverts. A timber wall replaced once at year eighteen means paying for excavation, backfill, drainage and labour a second time, and the second build is more disruptive than the first because there is now a garden, a paved area or a shed sitting behind it. Concrete costs more once.
The practical rule most builders use: if the wall is low, decorative and easy to get to, timber is a reasonable economy. If it is structural, tall, hard to access or has anything built behind it, the timber saving is borrowed money.
Strength and how tall you can go
Timber sleepers are typically 200mm by 75mm and span between posts under bending load. Push the height past about 900mm and you need closer post spacing, thicker sleepers or both, and the cost advantage starts eroding fast.
Concrete sleepers are far stiffer and carry more load per panel, which is why they are almost always paired with galvanised steel post systems. That combination handles 1.2 metre residential walls routinely and goes higher with proper engineering. If your wall is retaining a driveway, sitting under a pool or holding a level change on a cut and fill block, this is the system your engineer will specify.
What western Melbourne soil does to the decision
The western growth corridor sits largely on reactive clay. Estates around Deanside, Rockbank, Aintree and Fraser Rise are typically in the higher reactivity classifications, which means the ground swells through winter and shrinks back through summer.
That cyclical movement is hard on timber. Every season the soil grips, releases and grips again at the point where the post enters the ground, which is exactly where the timber is already most vulnerable to moisture. Galvanised steel posts are unaffected by it. On highly reactive sites this is often the argument that settles the decision on its own, regardless of budget.
Appearance, and the assumption worth checking
The common view is that timber looks better. That was true fifteen years ago. Concrete sleepers now come in a wide range of profiles and finishes including plain charcoal, sandstone, rockface and timber grain patterns that read convincingly from a few metres away.
Timber still has an advantage in one situation: where the wall is small, close to the eye and part of a planted garden setting. Untreated appearance ages naturally and softens into planting in a way concrete does not quite manage. For anything structural or viewed from a distance, appearance is no longer a strong argument either way.
Installation differences worth knowing before you order
- Timber sleepers can be cut on site with a circular saw. Concrete sleepers need a demolition saw with a diamond blade, so plan your lengths carefully and order to suit.
- A concrete sleeper weighs enough that two people or a lifter are needed. Factor that into a DIY plan before the delivery arrives.
- Steel post systems set the spacing, so the wall line has to be measured and set out accurately before any post holes are dug. Timber is more forgiving of a slightly irregular line.
- Both systems need the same drainage detail behind them: agricultural drain, geofabric and free draining aggregate. Neither material saves you from that.
So which should you choose?
Choose timber sleepers if the wall is under 900mm, purely decorative, in a garden setting, on stable soil, and you are comfortable with replacing it in around two decades.
Choose concrete sleepers with steel posts if the wall is over 900mm, structural, on reactive clay, retaining a driveway or paved area, in a location you would rather never revisit, or if anything permanent is going in behind it.

Frequently asked questions
Can you mix concrete sleepers with timber posts?
It is not recommended. Concrete sleepers are heavier and stiffer than timber, so the posts become the weak point in the system and will fail long before the panels do. Concrete sleepers are designed to be used with galvanised steel posts.
How many sleepers do I need per metre of wall?
Standard sleepers are 200mm deep, so a wall one metre high needs five courses. Multiply five by the length in metres, then add one course for the buried portion at the base and around ten per cent for cuts.
Do timber sleeper walls need to be sealed?
H4 treated pine does not require sealing to meet its rating, but sealing the exposed faces slows surface weathering and can add a few years to appearance life. It has no effect on the buried section, which is where the wall actually fails.
Are concrete sleepers heavier than a standard slab paver?
Considerably. A full length concrete sleeper is a two person lift. If you are planning a DIY build, arrange help before the delivery date rather than on the day.
Which material is better for a wall between two properties?
Concrete, in almost every case. A boundary wall is difficult and disruptive to replace once both sides are landscaped, and shared walls tend to bring shared responsibility for the cost of failure. Build it once.
